Quality Cinema, Human Filmmaking, and AI

Picco-Vision is an innovative AI film lab and think tank based in Berlin, Potsdam, and Vienna — researching, developing, licensing, and offering full-service production in the growing field of AI filmmaking and professional film production. This includes full-service cinematic AI content production and the seamless combination of AI-generated and filmed material as complete hybrid productions — available to advertising clients, brands, streaming platforms, and independent productions.

As a European Lighthouse project, Picco-Vision forms an out-of-the-box think tank at the intersection of artificial intelligence and cinema. We research, discuss, license, develop, bring to market, teach and design in different strings the connection, impact and potential of AI and professional film — supporting quality-enhancing approaches in process and result. We rethink film in resolution as well as as an idea philosophically.

Our team of skilled and established industry professionals and artists is highly motivated and we see the need to take action now — before it is too late including all questionable developments of AI and outcomes in terms of unquestioned money and various through pure tech possible scenarios causing potentially fatal results — as we have seen it happen in the past with other technological revolutions so far.

We do not fear it like others — we are taking part in re-thinking the field and maintain our visions in the best manners to take part in designing the future of our passionate profession.

"AI will revolutionize the (film) industry within the next years. It is not just an episode or a genre: it is a tsunami that rises slowly. Now is the time to take part in the design of it — or it will design us and all surrounding us"

AI Solutions for Professional Film Production

Five categories — designed for European quality filmmaking

Picco-Vision develops and evaluates AI tools for professional European filmmakers across five production categories. Each solution is assessed against three criteria: output quality for cinematic standards, compliance with EU AI Act requirements, and compatibility with existing professional workflows. Our founding team's active film production experience ensures every tool we develop addresses real bottlenecks in the production pipeline, not theoretical use cases.

1. AI Screenwriting & Script Development

AI screenwriting tools analyse script structure against large corpora of produced screenplays, identifying pacing issues, character arc weaknesses, and dialogue inconsistencies before the project enters development. AI can assist with character voice consistency across drafts, generate dialogue alternatives for testing, and predict audience reception based on genre alignment and current market data. Critically, these tools function as editorial assistants — the writer retains complete authorial control over every creative decision. Picco-Vision evaluates and develops AI screenwriting tools specifically calibrated for European story traditions and co-production structures, not the Hollywood formula-optimised systems that dominate the current market.

2. AI Pre-Production & Casting

Pre-production AI covers automated storyboarding — generating visual reference directly from script descriptions — alongside AI-assisted casting analysis and location intelligence systems. Casting tools require particular care under the EU AI Act: automated facial recognition and emotion detection systems in casting contexts are classified as high-risk AI applications and require mandatory bias audits, conformity assessments, and documented human oversight before deployment. Picco-Vision builds AI pre-production solutions that incorporate these compliance requirements from the architecture level, not as afterthoughts added for regulatory box-ticking.

3. AI Production Tools

On-set AI encompasses real-time colour science systems that maintain consistency across shooting days, AI framing assistance for camera operators, and automated continuity checking that flags costume, prop, or blocking inconsistencies between takes. These tools address practical production pain points that cost significant time and money in post — a mismatched prop in a cutaway, a colour temperature shift between exterior and interior coverage, a continuity break requiring a reshoot. AI production tools shift these quality checks from expensive post-production corrections to on-set prevention.

4. AI Post-Production

AI post-production tools represent the most mature category in the current market. Automated rough-cut assembly uses AI to select preferred takes from dailies based on director-defined criteria. AI-powered VFX generation significantly reduces rotoscoping, compositing, and green-screen cleanup time. Dialogue cleanup systems use machine learning to remove background noise, breath artifacts, and room tone inconsistencies across a production. Colour grading AI establishes consistent looks across scenes and can match the aesthetic of reference films with precision. Picco-Vision evaluates these tools specifically for quality-oriented production contexts where the goal is craft enhancement, not cost reduction through lower standards.

5. AI Distribution & Audience Strategy

Distribution AI analyses completed films against audience segmentation data, streaming platform acquisition patterns, and global festival circuit trends to generate targeted release strategies. Trailer optimisation tools predict audience engagement with different cut variations before a final trailer is locked. For European productions, AI distribution tools can identify international co-production markets and streaming partners based on content DNA analysis — extending a film's strategic reach beyond what any individual sales agent can accomplish manually, particularly for independent European productions navigating a market increasingly shaped by streaming platform algorithms.

Teaser-Factory — Our First AI Production Tool

Teaser-Factory is Picco-Vision's first released AI production tool — a desktop application that takes a natural-language project brief and delivers a finished, NLE-ready video edit. The pipeline runs in three automated phases: concept development (with five distinct structural variations), video and audio generation via Kling AI, Veo, and ElevenLabs, and pre-cut assembly with transitions and timing already set. Output is formatted for Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, and DaVinci Resolve in both 16:9 and 9:16 from a single brief. A built-in quality control system — the Naturalismus-Layer (NL1–NL5) — validates realism at each production stage to prevent uncanny valley effects in the final cut. Teaser-Factory is currently in open beta, available free of charge with a license key, and is the first in a planned suite of AI production tools being developed by Picco-Vision and Picco-Studio. teaser-factory.de →

Full-Service: Cinematic AI Content Production

Beyond developing and licensing AI tools, Picco-Vision offers a full-service for the production of high-quality cinematic AI content — from brief to finished visual material. Combining our in-house AI toolchain, the Naturalismus-Layer quality framework, and the hands-on production experience of Picco-Studio, we produce AI-generated visual content at a cinematic standard that conventional AI generation pipelines alone cannot achieve. Each project is supervised from concept through delivery by experienced filmmakers, ensuring that AI-generated imagery meets professional criteria for colour science, composition, and narrative coherence. The service covers brand films, advertising content, narrative sequences, digital environments, and visual identity material — wherever high-quality AI visual output is required at a level that justifies the Picco-Vision name. Output is delivered camera-ready for integration into existing edits or as self-contained finished pieces. Contact: info@picco-vision.com

AI-Hybrid Production — AI-Generated & Filmed Material Combined

The most cinematically compelling results today emerge at the intersection of AI-generated imagery and traditionally filmed footage — not from either in isolation. Picco-Vision's AI-Hybrid Production service combines AI-generated visual sequences, environments, and effects with professionally filmed material in a seamlessly integrated workflow. Our production team — drawing on the combined film and television experience of Picco-Studio — designs, shoots, and delivers hybrid productions in which AI generation handles what would otherwise require prohibitive visual effects budgets or simply could not be realised with camera alone, while the filmed footage maintains the human presence, texture, and authenticity that AI-only productions currently cannot replicate. The result is content at a cinematic quality level previously accessible only to large-budget productions, now available to advertising clients, brands, streaming platforms, and independent productions. Picco-Vision Think Tank — Ethical AI in Filmmaking Research, Berlin

THINK TANK — Ethical AI in Film

AI filmmaking is the use of machine learning systems to automate, assist, or generate creative and technical elements of film production — encompassing pre-production (AI-assisted scriptwriting, casting, storyboarding), production (AI camera systems, real-time VFX), post-production (AI editing, colour grading, sound design, visual effects), and distribution (AI-optimised marketing and audience targeting). It presents a dual-edged challenge: existential risks from automating traditional creative roles alongside transformative opportunities to democratize quality cinema and expand the boundaries of what is possible.

Ethical AI in filmmaking rests on three core principles. First, transparency: AI-generated or AI-assisted content must be clearly disclosed to audiences, collaborators, festivals, and distributors — an obligation that will be legally codified under EU AI Act Article 50 for all productions using synthetic media. Second, human primacy: AI serves as a craft instrument in the hands of the filmmaker, amplifying the human creative vision rather than generating it autonomously. Third, fair compensation: the economic benefits of AI efficiency must not be achieved by circumventing the contractual rights and earnings of writers, directors, actors, and crew — and licensing arrangements for AI training data must reflect the value of the human creative work they rely upon.

The EU AI Act and European Cinema

The EU AI Act creates the most consequential regulatory framework for AI in European cinema to date. Article 50 mandates machine-readable disclosure labels on all AI-generated synthetic media — faces, voices, and scenes — that must survive standard post-production processing. High-risk AI applications in casting, specifically facial recognition and automated emotion detection, require mandatory bias audits, conformity assessments, and documented human oversight before any deployment. General-purpose AI models used in scriptwriting or visual generation must maintain detailed transparency logs and technical documentation. European co-productions spanning multiple member states must navigate compliance across jurisdictions simultaneously. Picco-Vision develops practical frameworks to make EU AI Act compliance workable for small and medium-sized European productions — not just studio-scale operations with dedicated legal teams.

We believe that in the hands of experienced professionals committed to an ethical approach, AI integration in filmmaking can foster both innovation and inclusivity — making high-quality European cinema more efficient and internationally competitive while preserving what makes it irreplaceable: the human creative vision, the cultural specificity, the authorial perspective. The Picco-Vision Think Tank exists to ensure that the design decisions being made now — while the technology is still being shaped — serve cinema rather than displace it.

"AI will revolutionize the (film) industry within the next years. It is not just an episode or a genre: it is a tsunami that rises slowly. Now is the time to take part in the design of it — or it will design us and all surrounding us."

Picco-Vision Research — AI Film Production Research, EU AI Act Film Industry

RESEARCH — AI & Film: European Perspective

Picco-Vision's research programme was assembled from within the film industry, with connections to academic institutions including Harvard, MIT, UCLA, FH St. Pölten, Freie Universität Berlin, University of Vienna, and NYFA. This combination of active production experience and institutional research access enables a different kind of analysis: not theoretical observation from outside the industry, but applied research designed to produce practical outcomes for working European filmmakers.

Four Research Domains

(1) AI filmmaking tools and workflows: Systematic evaluation of AI tools across all production stages — assessing output quality for professional-grade European productions, workflow integration, cost-benefit analysis, and regulatory compliance. (2) EU AI Act compliance for film: Developing practical compliance frameworks including Article 50 disclosure protocols for synthetic media, conformity assessment procedures for AI in casting, and documentation standards for general-purpose AI models used in creative production. (3) Ethical AI frameworks for European cinema: Establishing principles and guidelines that protect human creativity, authorship, fair compensation, and cultural diversity in an AI-integrated film industry. (4) Long-term impact analysis: Researching the structural effects of AI adoption on film industry employment, creative authorship, the economics of production, and the cultural output of European cinema as a global art form.

Picco-Vision Education — KI-Filmausbildung, AI Film School Curriculum Berlin

AI Film Education & Curriculum

Picco-Vision develops a comprehensive AI film school curriculum at university level — training future European filmmakers to integrate AI tools across all production stages while maintaining an ethical, human-centred approach to storytelling. The curriculum is structured around the same four production phases addressed in our research and solutions: AI-assisted pre-production, AI production tools, AI post-production workflow, and AI distribution strategy. Every module pairs practical tool instruction with the ethical and regulatory context that defines responsible AI use in the European film industry.

University-Level Curriculum

The full university curriculum is designed as a standalone programme or as a modular integration within existing film school structures. Core competencies include: AI script analysis and development tools; AI storyboarding and visual pre-production; on-set AI assistance and real-time quality checking; AI post-production workflow covering rough-cut assembly, VFX, colour, and sound; AI distribution analytics and release strategy; and EU AI Act compliance for filmmakers — covering disclosure obligations, high-risk application protocols, and the documentation standards required by European co-production agreements. All modules are grounded in the principle that AI is a craft tool, not a creative replacement. Graduates leave with both technical proficiency and the critical framework to apply AI responsibly in professional contexts.

Professional Development Programmes

For experienced film industry practitioners, Picco-Vision offers targeted workshops and courses designed for immediate application in active productions. These programmes address the specific challenges facing established directors, producers, editors, and post-production supervisors navigating an AI-reshaped market — not how AI works in theory, but how to evaluate, select, and integrate AI tools into an existing professional practice without compromising craft standards or contractual obligations. All programmes are offered in German and English.

The education programme is led by Leigh Lisbão Underwood, Head of Cinetech & Head of Education at Picco-Vision, combining active film industry practice with a commitment to pedagogy that prepares European filmmakers to participate actively in shaping how AI develops in their profession — rather than having it imposed upon them from outside.
